We had no idea how this location was going to turn out. Montpelier was a new stop for us and it just felt right when we decided to book it for a few nights in early October. As we pulled in to the park it was apparent we were the ONLY ones there. We picked a spot that was just what we wanted and got settled in.
Location and Accessibility
Montpelier, Idaho, is a small, friendly town nestled in the Bear Lake Valley of southeastern Idaho. It’s surrounded by scenic mountains and open farmland, making it a peaceful stop for travelers heading to Bear Lake, just about 20 minutes away. The town has a rich pioneer history — it was an important stop along the Oregon Trail, and you can explore that heritage at the National Oregon/California Trail Center, one of its main attractions.
Downtown Montpelier offers a few local restaurants, shops, and small-town charm, while the surrounding area is great for outdoor recreation like fishing, hiking, snowmobiling, and camping. It’s not a big tourist hub, but it has that classic Idaho feel — quiet, welcoming, and close to some beautiful country.

Amenities and Activities
Montpelier Creek KOA is a charming, peaceful campground tucked beside a quiet creek and surrounded by Idaho’s rolling hills. The setting feels calm and inviting, with plenty of shade trees, clean sites, and a sense of open space that makes it easy to relax. Guests often mention how friendly and helpful the hosts are, adding to the welcoming, small-town feel.
Jeanne and Lori were the absolute perfect hosts.
The campground offers full hookups for RVs, tent sites, and cozy cabins, along with nice extras like a heated pool, playground, dog park, and walking trails along the creek. It’s close enough to town for convenience but still feels like a true getaway. Whether you’re passing through or staying a few days to explore nearby Bear Lake and the scenic mountain roads, Montpelier Creek KOA is a comfortable, family-friendly base that captures the simple charm of Idaho camping.
A note on the bathrooms and laundry room. Unmatched as far as cleanliness and maintenance. We loved our visit.
The Men's restroom. Very nicely updated and very clean.
In conclusion...
We had a great time. We took a day trip over to Preston, Idaho and found homes and graves of a few of our ancestors on Diane's side. It was a beautiful fall drive. On our last day, Jeanne brought us a warm loaf of sourdough bread. We have already made reservations for the end of May 2026.
Bigfoot is a good part of the lore for this KOA. The sourdough from Jeanne
