Way back in the late 1980's we brought our 24' Terry trailer with our family and stayed at this KOA. We set up the trailer in the rain then Cody and I climbed the hill to the railroad tracks to the north. We found some rail spikes and brought a few back with us. We still have them.
Much has changed in the past 40 years including this KOA. An expansive new area has been added at the east end. The once gravel, grass, and dirt sites have become more modern with concrete patios and views of the Partneuf River.
Location and Accessibility
Lava Hot Springs, Idaho, is a small mountain town with a lot of charm — best known for its natural, odor-free mineral hot pools that range from about 102 to 112°F. The “World Famous Hot Pools” are clean, relaxing, and open year-round, offering an especially magical experience in winter when you can soak outdoors surrounded by snow. In summer, the town buzzes with activity — river tubing down the Portneuf River, swimming at the Olympic-size pool and water park, and exploring the nearby trails and mountains.
The downtown area is cozy and walkable, with old-west-style buildings, local shops, and casual restaurants. Lodging options range from campgrounds and RV parks to rustic motels and charming inns, though they fill quickly during the summer season. While it’s not a luxury resort destination, the friendly atmosphere and natural beauty make it a perfect spot to unwind.
Crowds can be heavy in peak months, so visiting on weekdays or in spring and fall offers a quieter experience. No matter the season, Lava Hot Springs delivers a unique mix of relaxation and outdoor adventure — an easygoing escape where you can soak, float, and simply enjoy life at a slower pace.

Amenities and Activities
Lava Hot Springs East KOA Holiday offers a scenic, well-equipped stay right along the Portneuf River. The campground features full hookup RV sites (20/30/50 amp), tent and group sites, and deluxe cabins with bathrooms, kitchenettes, patios, and fire pits. Guests can enjoy clean restrooms, showers, laundry facilities, and free Wi-Fi, plus a communal pavilion with cooking and picnic areas. Pet-friendly options include sites with fenced “paw pens,” and there’s a playground, yard games, and easy river access for fishing or swimming.
The KOA’s riverside location makes it both peaceful and convenient, ideal for families or couples looking to relax after soaking in the hot springs or floating the river. The grounds are clean and well-maintained, and the friendly staff add to the welcoming feel. Whether you’re camping, RVing, or staying in a cabin, the Lava Hot Springs KOA East blends comfort with nature — offering a relaxing home base just a short walk from all the town’s main attractions.
In conclusion...
The KOA Lava Hotsprings East is one of our favorite places. We have visited at all times including the early spring and late fall. We enjoy the amenities and almost constant sound of the trains. If you are sensitive to the sound of the train or trucks coming down the canyon in the middle of the night, this place may not be the place for your quiet escape.
